The $504 million car-sized spacecraft first captured close-up images of the Apollo landing sites in July 2009, which revealed new details about the sites and even spotted hardware that was left behind on the lunar surface. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been in orbit around the moon since June 2009. Exclusive Video footage of THE FIRMAMENT DOMEAfter watching, it will impossible to deny the existence of the Firmament Dome and consequently also the existe. LRO has captured images of other Apollo landing sites before, including fascinating pictures that show tracks left by the Apollo 17 astronauts and their lunar rover. The samples showed that this region of the moon was once the site of volcanic activity, and that thin flows of lava had once flowed where Armstrong and Aldrin had roamed. The Apollo 11 astronauts returned valuable rock samples from the Sea of Tranquility landing site that revealed the moon's fiery past for the first time. Later, during Apollo 12 and 14, the astronauts were given more time to spend on the surface, and on the Apollo 15, 16 and 17 missions, the crews were equipped with a Lunar Roving Vehicle that enabled them to explore beyond the landing site. Interestingly enough, their tracks cover less area than a typical city block, according to NASA officials. The new image also clearly shows how restricted Armstrong and Aldrin were in their exploration of the area. ![]()

According to Japanophile Fred Patten, the very first fan club devoted to Japanese animation was the Cartoon/Fantasy Organization, which began in Los Angeles in 1977. The fan community in the English-speaking world began in the 1970s and steadily grew. In Japan, anime and manga are referred to collectively as the content industry: anime, video games, manga, and other related merchandise are different types of media focused around the same content. ( Learn how and when to remove this template message)Īnime and manga fandom traces back to at least the 1970s when fans of the series Space Battleship Yamato banded together to get it back on the air after it stopped airing on Japanese television. However, older generation otaku, like Otaking (King of Otakus) Toshio Okada, in his book Otaku Wa Sude Ni Shindeiru (オタクはすでに死んでいる) said the newer generation of self-proclaimed otakus are not real otakus, as they lack the passion and research sense into a particular sub-culture subject and are only common fans which only overspent in buying products. However, the term started to be used by anime and manga fans themselves again starting in the 2000s, in a more general and positive way, and today it is often used by those outside of the fandom to refer to fans of anime or manga. Otaku can be seen as being similar to the English terms geek or nerd. After its wild spread usage by Japanese residents, however, it became pejorative and increasingly offensive in the 1990s, implying that a person is socially inept. Animators like Haruhiko Mikimoto and Shōji Kawamori used the term among themselves as an honorific second-person pronoun since the late 1970s. It appears to have been coined by the humorist and essayist Akio Nakamori in his 1983 series An Investigation of "Otaku" ( 『おたく』の研究, "Otaku" no Kenkyū), printed in the lolicon magazine Manga Burikko. In the anime Macross, first aired in 1982, the term was used by Lynn Minmay as an honorific term. The modern slang form, which is distinguished from the older usage by being written only in hiragana (おたく) or katakana (オタク or, less frequently, ヲタク), or rarely in rōmaji, appeared in the 1980s. In its original context, the term otaku is derived from a Japanese term for another's house or family ( お宅, otaku), which is also used as an honorific second-person pronoun. Otaku is a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, including anime or manga. ![]() ![]() ![]() I grew up on a sheep farm in southern West Virginia in the 1990s, and I’d never met an out queer person before I left for college in Massachusetts in the early 2000s, where I quickly discovered my own queerness and bought into the long-standing narrative that queer people don’t-maybe even can’t-live in places like where I had come from. Since 2013 I’ve been gathering oral-history interviews with rural and small town LGBTQ+ folks across the continental United States for a project called Country Queers. In 2011, while home visiting their parents, Mike and his sister went to a drag show at Cumberland’s Embassy Theatre and were blown away by the thriving drag community in town-the energy and charisma of the queens, the robust and adoring audience, none of which he’d imagined were possible in the conservative and largely rural county where he was raised. I’ve been invited to town by Mike Snyder, a photographer raised just up the road in Frostburg, Maryland, who’s been working to document Cumberland’s drag queens for nearly a decade. I easily develop a crush on Cumberland’s contradictions. This kind of quirkiness also feels familiar, where “museums’’ are often an eccentric collection of marbles or old canning jars. Multicolored party lights spin dizzily above the collection. Popularity A furry performs Caramelldansen, 2009. The meme soon after spread to YouTube and became a global phenomenon. Its boom began at the end of 2007 in Japan (known as the "Uma uma Boom") where an explosion of different Caramelldansen iterations appeared in the Japanese video-sharing site Nico Nico Douga. Artists and fans started to copy the animation and include other characters performing the dance. Sven posted the loop with the repeated phrase "ANIME LOL!" Īs the video and song clip gained popularity, it became a meme. In the same year, its chorus part was combined with the animation loop and posted to 4chan by a "Sven from Sweden", who does not recall using Speedycake's file, but got it from the internet in filesharing. According to an interview with Ruakuu, Speedycake said the speed-up came from a mixing mistake while transitioning the "Caramelldansen" song to a faster BPM, and it ended up being "squeaky and high pitched", but that people were requesting for it anyway. In late 2005, a sped-up version of the song was posted by a DJ named Speedycake to 4chan. The clips were matched with various songs, with titles ranging from "Popotan dance" to "Sexy bunny dance". After the anime was aired from 17 July to 2 October 2003, short GIF animations clips were created from the opening of the game and posted on the internet. Popotan first appeared as a Japanese PC game on 12 December 2002. The meme started as a fifteen frame Flash animation loop showing Mai and Mii, characters of the Japanese visual novel Popotan, doing a hip swing dance with their hands over their heads to imitate rabbit ears, and the chorus of a sped up version of the song. Internet phenomenon Animation loop from the visual novel Popotan, used in the internet meme known as "Caramelldansen".
